An ebook by Brad Teare

I attended an exhibit of Van Gogh paintings at the Met. I thought I knew his work. I’d seen it in books my whole life. But up close, everything changed. The paint wasn’t flat—it was thick, physical. Ridges and strokes catching the light, shifting as I moved. It wasn’t just an image. It was alive.

The Moment Everything Changed

The power wasn’t just in what he painted. It was in the paint itself. The strokes followed the form. They carried light. They held movement. And somehow, they held energy. That’s what I had never seen before.
After that, I stopped trying to describe the landscape. I started building it with paint. Thicker. More physical. Letting the surface do the work—hold the light, the structure, the feeling.

Reproductions flatten everything. They can’t show the surface. They can’t show the light moving across it. They can’t show the energy held in the paint. That only exists in the original.
If you want to see what I mean, take a closer look at my work. You’ll start to see it—the way the paint catches light, the way the surface shifts, the way the energy stays in the painting. That all started with that moment in front of a Van Gogh.
